Robocup 2013

Robocup 2013

The Georgia Tech Robocup team spent the week of June 22nd – June 31st in Eindhoven, the Netherlands competing in the 2013 Robocup. The week was filled with Robocup scrimmages, matches, a little bit of sightseeing, and mostly exploring robotics all around the competition. Robocup 2013 – more information can be found here www.robocup2013.org – was comprised of various soccer-playing robot leagues, rescue robot leagues, service robot leagues, and some other smaller competitions. There were an estimated 2500 participants from at least 40 different countries, as well as thousands of spectators a day. A lot of the gain from going to the competition was in sharing ideas and knowledge with competing teams and learning more about the other leagues, like humanoid robot competitions (which aim to take on the World Cup winners in 2050). The competitions ended on June 30th with a match between humans and mid-size robots – parts of which can be seen here: .

Georgia Tech played a total of 4 games and had the following scores from each:
vs. MRL from Iran 0-9
vs. Skuba from Thailand (last year’s winners) 0-7
vs. ERForce from Germany 0-0
vs. MTC from Japan 0-0

There was a tough grouping for the first matches having to go against the winners from last year and the 3rd place winners from this year. The competition had 5 groups and 5 teams in each group for a total of 25 teams and in order to move on into the playoffs, you had to rank in the top of your group.

The winning teams were:
1st: ZJUNlict from China
2nd: Carnegie Melon from the US
3rd: MRL from Iran

Pictures from the event can be found here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/robocup2013/  and soon to come will be videos of Georgia Tech’s matches.

All in all, it was an awesome week, a HUGE learning experience for everyone on the team and we’re ready to start working to get ready for Brazil for Robocup 2014 next year!
